How many federal courts are there in the United States?
There are 94 federal judicial districts, including at least one district in each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Three territories of the United States — the Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands — have district courts that hear federal cases, including bankruptcy cases.–uscourts.gov the federal judiciary also includes the supreme court, 12 regional circuits (courts of appeal). Bankrupcy is handled by the district courts, but are treated separately just as each district court handles civil and criminal cases separately. There are other federal courts that handle specific agency issues such as tax court for IRS, social security courts to handle social security complaints, etc. Military personnel are tried in military courts.
There are three general jurisdiction Federal courts – The Supreme Court, the US courts of Appeals and the US district courts. There are several specific subject matter jurisdiction courts (i.e. Tax court, bankruptcy court, etc) There are 11 circuits (not including the DC circuit and the federal circuit) for the courts of appeals and the district courts.
