How many f-stops / EVs apart do I need to shoot for creating HDRs?

Commonly, most people shoot in 2 EV increments when shooting Raw and shoot 1 EV increments when shooting in the JPEG format. If you shoot in 1 EV brackets, then you will probably have less noise overall since the shots are closer together. However, this also means that if you shoot 1EV brackets, you will need to shoot many more photos, take up more disk space and time, and the more shots you take, the more the odds are that you may end up with ghosting artifacts when shooting in changing environments. See the next question as well for further related information. SIDENOTE – I asked Paul Debevec about this and he said they always shoot in 2EV brackets using RAW. If that is good enough for him, that it is certainly good enough for me!!!
