The Social Security Administration (SSA) currently has about 65,000 employees (including permanent full-time and part-time employees and temporary employees). The administrative cost of Social Security (OASDI) was $3.5 billion in 1998 and is paid from Social Security taxes. SSA also runs the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSI administrative costs were about $2.3 billion in FY 1998, and are paid from general federal revenues.
