How many eggs does a female locust produce?
Locusts lay their eggs in the soil in pods at a depth of about 10 centimetres (picture). The female bores a hole in the ground with the tip of her abdomen, deposits 30-50 eggs and fills the remainder of the hole with a froth plug. This froth plug provides an escape route to the surface for nymphs when they hatch. Females can potentially lay up to 4 egg pods, at 5-7 day intervals under ideal conditions but few survive to lay a third time.
