There have been 131 deaths attributed to drug overdoses in New Hanover County between 2005 and July of 2010, according to the state medical examiner’s office. According to the N.C. Department of Public Health, since 1999 more than 5,700 North Carolinians have died from unintentional poisonings – the majority of which stem from narcotics and prescription drugs.
