How many differing types or rankings of angels are there?
We do not know the exact structure which God established for the angels. What we do know is: Cherubim are the highest rank whose duty is to minister in the presence of God. On occasion we find Cherubim on missions of special importance for God. Such as the Cherub with the flaming sword who blocked the way to the Tree of Life when Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden (Gen. 3:24). Seraphim are also among the highest in rank. There name means “burning ones.” They are seen in Isaiah 6 proclaiming God’s holiness. Only three angels are mentioned by name; Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer. Michael is pictured as a military leader and he is designated as an Archangel. This designation denotes a ranking among the angels. Gabriel holds the position of God’s messenger. He brought special messages to God’s people: Zechariah, Luke 1:19ff; Mary, Luke 1:26; Daniel, Daniel 8 & 9. Lucifer seems to have been created with special beauty and honor.
