How many different parrrotfish types are present in the Cook Islands?
Thirteen species of parrotfish are known to occur in the Cook Islands. One, the swarthy parrotfish, is known to occur only on Suwarrow. Many of these species have different Maori names on each island, depending on colour and size. Where are they found? The larger parrotfish are often found on the reef at high tide and then on the outer reef slope at low tide. Parrotfish may swim over a wide area while feeding during the day, especially when they are in their protective large schools. Biology They feed mainly on small plants (algae) which they scrap off dead coral rock using their strong beak. A few of the larger parrotfish also feed on live coral. Young females of most species will change their sex and become male at a certain stage in their life. During this sex change, they also change in colour. Usually parrotfish will mate in pairs but one species Tomore (Scarus schlegeli) aggregates with other individuals to release eggs and sperm (spawn). Parrotfish will mate several times a year
