How many different labs are at the San Diego Zoos Wild Animal Park?
The Zoological Society of San Diego’s center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) is the largest zoo-based multidisciplinary research team in the world. CRES opened in 1976 and now has 7 labs. 2. How long have the labs been in operation? Back in January 2000, there used to be labs at the San Diego Zoo. In October 2004, the labs moved here to the Wild Animal Park. 3. What is the focus of the lab and what are the different species you work with? The 7 labs focus on molecular genetics, behavior, cytogenetics, endocrinology (reproductive physiology), applied conservation/ecology, molecular diagnostics, as well as a plant division. The pathology lab focuses on animal health and infectious disease and occasionally genetic diseases in conjunction with molecular biology. Currently the species we are studying include California condors, primates, pandas, rhinos, ruminants, snakes, frogs, exotic cats, mule deer, ravens, crows, turkey vultures, and passerine (song) birds.
