How many crosses to get the wool off?
Using full shedding rams (usually the most expensive) most of the third generation should shed from a Merino ewe as the base. In the pure animals it seems relatively easy to get the wool off with a single mating to a shedding ram. Even though cheaper type rams carrying more wool are used in crossbreeding it will only be a matter of introducing clean rams at third cross to make good progress towards shedding. Commercial breeders are reporting that introducing a clean shedding ram to woolly White Dorper cross ewes produces a high percentage of clean shedding ewes.
