How many countries are in Australia continent?

TRY reading this and help yourself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia Australia has six states and two major mainland territories. There are also lesser territories that are under the administration of the federal government. The states are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. The two major mainland territories are the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). In most respects these two territories function like states, but the Commonwealth Parliament can override any legislation of their parliaments. By contrast, federal legislation only overrides state legislation in certain areas that are set out in Section 51 of the Australian Constitution; state parliaments retain all residual legislative powers, including powers over hospitals, education, police, the judiciary, roads, public transport, and local government. There is only one country on the continent of Australia. That country is also called Australia. Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent.

There is just one country in Australia. That country is called Australia… Australia is a continent in it’s own right as well as a country. So it’s continent is inhabited by it’s self and it’s self only. Not even a few microstates. It is just the Commonwealth of Australia that inhabits the Australian continent. Oceania is not a continent. Oceania is a REGION in the pacific ocean that comprises 14 nations including Australia, however it is not a continent. The continent you are talking about is called Australia and Australia is the only nation in the continent of Australia. There is a reason why all those other answers have 10 thumbs down each. It’s because they are wrong. The answers with the thumbs up are correct.

There is ONLY one country on the Australian continent! ONE! UNO! EK! UN! EINS! EEN! ONE for crying out loud! That country is Australia. It is an island continent. How many different bloody ways can it be said? How come there are so many people who don’t know that?? Oceania is NOT a continent. It is a political and statistical region and you asked about the continent of Australia. Oceania wasn’t mentioned and rightly so. And the continent of Australia may be a small continent, but the country of Australia is huge and is the 6th largest country in the world comprising 5.2% of the world’s land mass. It is more than twice the size of India and nearly 32 times the size of the UK.

It would seem that there is some confusion here…. Australia is the only island continent on our planet …our continent extends as far as the continental shelf …that is where the sea floor drops away ! It does not include the countries of Oceania… http://www.dfat.gov.au/aib/island_contin…
