How many coal mines are in New Mexico?

There are nine permitted coal mines in New Mexico. Three mines, Lee Ranch, McKinley, Navajo, and San Juan Underground, are currently producing. Another, El Segundo, was recently permitted, but will probably not produce any coal until 2008. The other producing coal mine is the Navajo mine located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The Office of Surface Mining, not the State of New Mexico, permits this mine. Visit our Coal Mines Web Map for more information.
