How many Christmas trees do Canadians buy?
According to the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association (CCTGA) website, Canada harvests more than 5.5 million Christmas trees each year. More than two million of these trees are exported, the CCTGA reports, while the remainder stay north of the 49th parallel. Lewis Downey told CTV.ca that while these sales figures seem healthy, there has been a gradual decline in the popularity of Christmas trees — both real and artificial — over the years. “The number of trees sold don’t increase, despite the fact that the population is increasing, and the same goes for artificial trees,” the CCTGA executive director said in a recent phone interview from his home in Sherbrooke, Que. “The trend is kind of changing.” Downey said that although a smaller percentage of people are buying trees today than in the past, the overall number of trees sold has stayed relatively stable — and even in a holiday season when people are cutting back on their purchases, he said they are still buying Christmas tr
