How many chords are there on a guitar?

When you consider that a chord is just two or more notes played at the same time, the answer is almost infinite. There are twelve (one for every available root note) of each ‘type’ of chord: Major, Minor, 7th, Minor 7th, Maj 7th, 9th, Diminished, Augmented, Suspended 4th, etc. plus lots more weird and wonderful chords used in jazz and classical music. In addition, there are many different inversions of each chord – for example a G major can be played as an open chord or by using the F shape at the 3rd fret (to name just two of many inversions). Hope this helps!
