How many children are now being homeschooled?
Since many states do not have a mandatory reporting requirement (and even in those that do, not all families choose to comply), it is difficult to determine how many families are homeschooling at any given point in time. Current estimates range from 1,700,000 to 2.1 million homeschooled students in the United States. If recent annual percentage increases are any indication, homeschooling will see a phenomenal amount of growth in the future. The growth of homeschooling in New Hampshire is following the national trend. In 1987, the New Hampshire Department of Education reported that 346 children were being educated at home.
