How many charters have been approved and revoked in NJ?
Since 1996 when the charter school law passed in NJ, 237 charter applications have been submitted to the NJ Department of Education and 88 have been approved. Of the 88 charters approved: • 49 charter public schools are currently operating. • 4 schools plan to open in Fall 2005 (D.U.E. Season Charter School, Ecole de la Mer French Immersion Charter School of NJ, ECO Charter School, Union County TEAMS Charter School). • 2 schools plan to open in Fall 2006 (Central Jersey Arts Charter School, University Heights Charter School) • 4 schools were consolidated to meet parent demands for expanded enrollment. • 11 charters never opened their doors because they could not locate, renovate, or afford suitable facilities. • 5 schools struggling with facilities and fiscal concerns voluntarily surrendered their charters.
