How many chances does a writer have to get a job with Marvel?
Nobody is guaranteed a seat at the table–if your work isn’t good enough, if you can find no takers among the assorted editors at the company, then that’s the way it goes. But there’s no time limit on being able to break in either. If you pitch for sixty years and then suddenly make a breakthrough and are thereafter a spectacular writer, then you’re going to be able to find purchase. The only corollary to that is that it may be more difficult to get people to take a third, fourth or fifth look after a number of bad early showings (or bad behavior when being evaluated.) People will tend to carry their impressions with them.
