How many cemeteries are there in the U.S.?
There are large number of completely undocumented family cemeteries and otherwise undocumented cemetires in the US. There is not even a comprehensive database of the well known cemeteries in the US. I am often trying to track down cemetery records and cemetery locations for genealogy research, and I am always surprised to discover yet another undocumented cemetery even in the county where I grew up. There are currently 3,141 counties in the United states. If every county had 100 cemeteries (and that is a gross underestimate) there would be well over 300,000 cemeteries. My guess would be that the true answer is likely to be closer to half a million.
