How many calories in 100g canned chick peas (garbanzo beans) and also lentils?
Right now the USDA national nutritional database seems to be off line, so I can’t check, but my guess is that they are INCLUDING the liquid in the can along with the beans or lentils as part of the serving. This is a WRONG thing to do because you aren’t going to normally consume the liquid. You will drain the can and eat the lentils or beans, not the liquid…the label is misleading and should be reported to the FDA (you can call your local FDA regional office and speak to an investigator and report the label as being inaccurate or misleading). In the mean time, lets use some common sense about it. Lentils and chick peas are mainly starch and its 4 calories per gram of starch, so 4 x 100 = 400 calories. We take into account that some of the lentils are water, and we see that 341 calories makes sense considering water is zero calories. So I would go with the calorie king on line and not the label of that can. Report the misleading label to FDA and they will contact the manufacturer and
