At present, no country is pursuing stem cell research more aggressively than China. When we searched the Wanfang Databank [5], a counterpart of PubMed that includes all biological publications in Chinese, we found that the number of papers containing “stem cell” in their title was 78 in 1999. It then increased rapidly, reaching 4,343 in 2007 (Table 1). The accelerating publications on stem cells suggest that the Chinese government has heavily funded stem cell research.
