How many Australians died in the Vietnam War?
The answer is 521 total deaths for Australians in the Vietnam War, From the time of the arrival of the first members of the Team in 1962 almost 60,000 Australians, including ground troops and air force and navy personnel, served in Vietnam; 521 died as a result of the war and over 3,000 were wounded. The war was the cause of the greatest social and political dissent in Australia since the conscription referendums of the First World War. Many draft resisters, conscientious objectors, and protesters were fined or gaoled, while soldiers met a hostile reception on their return home.
Just an interesting footnote, of all those Australians (and yes, it was 521 killed DURING the conflict, many more died, and die still from the effects of PTSD and Agent Orange) ) Killed in Action, or Missing in Action, there are just 2 bodies of soldiers unaccounted for left in Vietnam, and a team of Veterans and researchers are seeking to recover the remains of those two servicemen to return them to Australiian soil. Australian casualties were relatively low, as the training given to Australian servicemen was excellent. The Vietnamese used to call the American G.I.’s “Elephant Soldiers”, because they could see and hear and smell them a mile off.
