There are typically about ten astronomers at the site on the same shift. This represents less than 10% of the total “population” of the observatory, which, besides the technical staff, also includes logistics, administration, and general service personnel. Even among the technical staff, astronomers are not the most numerous; four times as many engineers and technicians are normally on site. This highly specialised team is in charge of optimising the performance of the machines and preventing time loss due to technical problems.
