How many animals are used in research and testing?
The USDA tracks the numbers of all warm-blooded animals used in research and testing, with the exception of rats, mice, and birds. These numbers are published annually in the USDA Animal Care Report. No agency in the United States tracks the numbers of rats, mice, and birds used in research and testing. However, it has been estimated that 95% of all animals used in research in the U.S. are rats, mice, and birds (Trull and Rich, 1999).
