How many and what types of genetically modified products have been reviewed by health canada?
Since 1994, Health Canada has issued letters indicating no objection to the use of 42 genetically modified products based on the absence of identifiable concerns during the safety assessment. Most of these products are crop plants (e.g. corn, canola, potatoes, and soybean) that have been genetically modified to improve agronomic characteristics such as crop yield, hardiness and uniformity, insect and virus resistance; and herbicide tolerance. Tomatoes that express delayed ripening characteristics have also been assessed and approved. A few of the products have been modified to intentionally change the composition, e.g. canola oil with increased levels of lauric acid.
