How many and what types of calls does the California Poison Control System manage?
Approximately half the calls involve children five years and younger. The most common unintentional poisonings involve substance such as acetaminophen and bleach. These are also two of the most common products kept in the home. About 80% of calls come from residences and 14% come from health care facilities and medical professionals. During 2001, seventy seven percent of calls to CPCS involved human exposures. Nineteen percent were calls for information and four percent were calls regarding animal exposures. The CPCS managed approximately 301,000 cases during 2001.
