How many Americans live in France currently?
I’ve been in France for 30 years now, and have come to understand this question of number like a river. There is part of the river (the riverbed) that never changes: these are the expats who hardly ever leave France, even for a month. There are the opposite extreme, those who come to France for a week – this is the top of the river, flowing by. And then lots and lots of in-betweens. I know many Americans going back and forth to the States (I used to myself). So the figure of “25-30,000” Americans registered in France doesn’t mean very much. You need to see “how high the river is”. And I’ve heard there are 300-400 thousand Americans (including tourists) at high season. But even in wintertime, there are more than just the 25-30,000 residents, since many Americans come over for part of the winter. Conclusion: I’d say there are 100-150 thousand Americans in France in low season, and 300-400 thousand in high season. This comes from hundreds of conversations I’ve had at American Club cocktai
