How many American fighter pilots are recognized as Aces?
The American Fighter Aces Association recognizes 1,449 American figher pilots as confirmed Aces. This total covers the time periods of 1918 to the present day. The above figure also includes American pilots who became Aces while flying with the Air Forces of Foreign Countries. First World War 1916-18 – 118 Aces (Includes 41 Americans who flew with the British Flying Corps & French Air Service. Russian Civil War 1919 – 1 Ace Sino-Japanese War 1937-41 – 3 Aces Spanish Civil War 1937 – 1 Ace Second World War 1939-45 – 1,285 Aces (USAAF 739, USN 382, USMC 122, RAF 22 & AVG 20). Korean War 1950-53 – 41 Aces (the actual number is 34, 7 Aces from WWII became Aces again in Korea. Vietnam War 1964-72 – 2 Aces (1 USN & 1 USAF) Combined air victories 2 wars – 5 Aces (4 WWII + Korea & 1 WWII + Israel 1949).
