A. It is estimated that more than 12 million children under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents to AIDS. These African AIDS orphans represent one quarter of the estimated 48 million orphans worldwide. In 2005, about 4.1 million people became infected with HIV and 2.8 million died of AIDS. In the last 25 years, more than 65 million people contracted HIV and nearly 25 million men, women and children have died of AIDS.
