According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 37 million white smokers and 5.5 million African-American smokers in the United States in 2006. Seventy-five percent of African-American adult smokers and 23 percent of white adult smokers prefer menthol brands, meaning that in 2006 there were roughly four million African-American menthol smokers and more than eight million white menthol smokers.
