How many acres in size is Yellowstone National Park?
Yellowstone National Park covers 2,219,789 acres which is the same as 3,472 square miles or 8,987 square kilometers or 898,317 hectares. According to the National Park Service website, this is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. Approximately 96 percent of Yellowstone National Park is in the state of Wyoming, 3 percent is in Montana, and 1 percent is in Idaho. The park is roughly rectangular in shape and measures 63 miles by air north to south and 54 miles east to west. Approximately 5 percent of park is covered by water, 15 percent is grassland, and 80 percent is forest. In 2007, 3,151,342 guests visited Yellowstone which set a record at the time. Yellowstone National Park was established by the U.S. Congress as a national park on March 1, 1872.
