How mangroves protect costal environment?
Mangroves are a type of tree that is capable of surviving both flooded conditions and high salinity. These unique traits enable it to colonize large of portions of shallow coastal areas that are not affected by frost (freezing temperatures kill mangroves). Because of this a large number of fish, crustaceans, and other coastal inhabitants have evolved to live in the mangrove swamps (i.e. mangrove ecosystem). Many species can’t survive without them. In addition, the intricate roots of mangrove help to stabilize soil and provide some protection from hurricanes and other storms.
