Also, if your alveoli were to be filled with fluid or cells of the alveoli were to become thicker, the luncg efficiency would decrease. So anything that would reduce gas exchange will decrease lung efficiency. 3. First cries at birth is very important, as it indicates that the baby has overcome the pressure in the lungs to inflate it, and take in gases. At birth, your lungs are filled with fluids, and there’s alot of surface tension. You’d have to overcome the surface tension (extremely strong at birth) to be able to breathe.
