Most countries in the world offer a degree qualification through a University or Nursing College. Normally you would be taught midwifery as part of an overall nursing degree. However, in the last number of years it has become possible in both the US and UK to study what is called “Direct Entry Midwifery” which is a shorter course but will only qualify you do Midwifery and not other forms of nursing. In the US (mainly) it is also possible to become a “Lay” or “Traditional” Midwife where you will receive training but not a medically recognised qualification. This obviously has an impact when you are trying to set up a practise and then trying to get insurance cover – this would also be dependant on which state you want to work in as well as some don’t even allow midwives to practice independantly.
