Because of the multiple capabilities on the card (e.g., chip, magnetic stripe, bar code), the CAC will last through the expiration date on the card. Of course, this timeframe is flexible. If the chip is tampered with, severe environmental conditions exist or physical abuse of the card occurs or the information printed on the card changes the CAC may not endure its maximum life span.
