How long will my pet need to be hospitalized after administration of the radioactive iodine?
Radioactive iodine is eliminated from the body through the kidneys and urine. The amount of time needed for your pet to eliminate the radioactivity varies based on how long it is bound to the thyroid tissue, and how well your pet’s kidneys are functioning. Typically, this should be less than 1 week (average 4 days), but may take up to 10 days depending upon these variables. This will require daily monitoring by our personnel to determine if the radioactivity is below a level determined safe by the University, the State of Michigan, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). How will my pet be cared for during his or her hospitalization? Your pet will be monitored and tended to twice daily by our personnel that have been specially trained for handling radioactive substances. This will entail feeding, watering, litter change, cage clean up, and possible medication administration. The allowed frequency and complexity of administration of medication will be at the discretion of your admi
