How long will my dependent children be eligible for health benefits coverage?
Unmarried children, including natural children, legally adopted children, children in a waiting period prior to finalization of adoption, and dependent children are eligible for health benefits coverage until they reach age 19. Unmarried children age 19 or over who are full-time students at an accredited secondary or preparatory school, college or other educational institution, and are otherwise not eligible for employer group coverage, continue to be eligible for health benefits coverage until the first of the following events occurs: The end of the third month following the month of their last semester (please check the NYSHIP book for details); or The end of the month in which they reach age 25. There are special rules applicable to foreign adoptions, please ask your department’s Human Resources Representative for further information or refer to the NYSHIP General Information Book.
