How long will a fish survive out of water?

To leave a fish out of water to kill it is very painfull to the fish and it will suffer the same as a human suffocating. This is a kind way to euthanise (put to sleep) a fish. Oil Of Clove Add 12 drops of Oil of Clove per 1 gallon (3.84 liters) of dechlorinated water. Oil of clove is very hard to mix so you may want to emulsify the clove oil by placing it in a smaller amount of water in a glass jar and shake well. Place the fish in a container large enough for it to move around freely along with an airstone on the highest setting and add the clove oil solution. The airstone will help keep the clove oil in solution. Once the fish turns on its side, watch the opercular movements (respiration/gill movements). The fish should be removed from the solution after at least ten minutes have passed since the last observed opercular movements (respiration/gill movements). After this the fish will be dead and you can bury or dispose of it in another way.

the most humane way is to freeze the fish in a plastic bag with water in it. Do not flush it, this prolongs suffering and pain. It DOES NOT lead to the ocean. There are water purifiers and disgusting and chemically toxic thing in the water system once it gets through the toilet. This is unbelievably inhumane unless the fish is already dead.

they do last for as long as 30 seconds but if u just want to get it over and done with the quick way then put it in a plastic bag with water in it an tie it from the top then throw the bag in the outside bin and just leave the fish to die naturally. for me, that would be the less painful way.

I always just let mine die in the tank. If you let it pass away without water that would be like you not being able to catch your breath!

My wife used to work in a school as a lab tech. The recomended method of killing small fish was to drop them into boiling water. Sounds a bit awful but it’s VERY quick and I doubt they had time to suffer any pain.
