How long to learn to sail a 40ft yacht around the coasts of the world?
Start with little steps, not huge leaps. If you’ve never sailed go down to a local harbor or yacht club and see if you can volunteer to crew for someone. I’ve been racing sailboats of all sizes for 50 years now. You’d be amazed how many wanna be sailors I’ve seen that get out there on the first day it’s blowing stink, and suddenly decide that sailings not really for them. The rail goes under and the boats heeled over on it’s ear, and all they can do is to hold on for dear life. I’ve also known people who decided to buy a $75K sailboat to go cruising with. They had no experience sailing either, and got rid of that boat the following year for a substantial loss. They bounced the keel of the boat off the bottom everywhere they went. A 40 ft sailboat will draw between 5 and 7 feet. When you’re sailing you have limited control of where you can steer, and going through narrow spots it’s real easy to run aground.
