How long to become “capable” in jujitsu?

I’m not sure which particular type of jj you’re talking about, i.e Brazilian, Japanese, Sport, etc. I’m going to assume that you mean BJJ, simply because it is the the form of Jits that I have the most experience with, and because it has yet to split into as many eclectic ryu’s as Japanese Jujitsu. With BJJ, while training a few times a week for a couple years is not going to turn you into a martial arts expert/master (I believe that the average time to a BJJ black belt is 9-10 years), it will produce significant results. I had previous martial arts experience, but when I started BJJ I was being completely dominated in sparring by relatively small people with only 6 months of training. If you train hard for 1-2 years you will probably be able to handily beat 95% of non-grapplers and most people whose h2h training is solely from the military on the ground and will pick up enough takedowns and clinch fighting to put fights there. I’m not sure how your country’s armed forces works exactly
