How long r french lessons & what and where do french school students eat for lunch?

Lessons in French schools last one hour each. The school day is longer for secondary school students and can start at 8am or finish at 6pm but generally it is from 9am to 5pm. Primary schools open from 9am to 4pm. At lunch time there is a two hour break and pupils who live near by go home for lunch. Those who live further away have the option of going to the school canteen (la cantine!) which serves an assortment of hot dishes, salads and various puddings, yogurts or fruit. Generally the canteen food is tasty and healthy and, since school meals receive a large state subsidy, are cheap and popular. Alternatively seniors are allowed off the premises and they go into town for a snack, or eat their own packed lunches.
