How long may it pose a risk to human health?
Class C waste will decay to levels that present an acceptable hazard within 500 years following site closure. Detailed hazard assessments were performed and presented in the Draft and Final Environmental Impact Statements on 10 CFR 61 Licensing Requirements for Land Disposal of Radioactive Waste. These documents are NUREG-0782 and NUREG-0945. They are available through the National Technical Information Service. How long may it pose a risk to the environment including, but not limited to, the impacts on water, air, and wildlife? At the time Class C waste is received and disposed of, it is either in an inherently stable waste form (e.g., irradiated stainless steel) or it is packaged in a High Integrity Container. The waste form and/or container prevent any release of radioactivity at the time of disposal. When disposed, Class C waste is also buried deeper than Class B waste to ensure that the waste will not be contacted in the event that an intruder constructs a house on the site. The d
