How long is the training after FY2 to CCT?
The fastest route would involve 2 years of Core Medical Training (CT1 and CT2) during which it would be expected the trainee would pass MRCP PACES. After entry to higher specialist training (StR3) following competitive interview a CCT in renal medicine can be obtained in 4 years (i.e. at end of StR6 year). Training for a CCT in renal medicine consists of 3 clinical years in the specialty of nephrology and 1 other year (fourth year of training). The 4th year can be a further clinical year in nephrology, a research year, a year in general medicine or even a year training outside the Deanery (with prospective agreement of Postgraduate Dean and PMETB). A large number of renal trainees also train in internal medicine which means a total of 5 years as a higher specialist trainee (3 years of nephrology and 2 years of internal medicine).
