For Ground and Law contracts, the active duty time commitment is 3 years, beginning the day that you check in to The Basic School. For Aviation contracts, the commitment begins the day that you finish flight school; 6 years for helicopter pilots and NFOs, and 8 years for fixed-wing pilots. Regardless of the contract, if you choose not to accept your commission, no military service commitment is incurred.
