How long is the battery in the new hybrid cars expected to last?
The warranty on both the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius is for 8 years. That’s longer than many people own their cars; it’s enough to put on 100,000 miles with ordinary driving and 200,000 for heavy drivers. Both Honda and Toyota have said that they expect the battery to last as long as the rest of the car. That’s how much Toyota is willing to vouch for with their own money. Engineers put the actual life span of the batteries at at least 10 to 12 years. The computer in a hybrid is designed to maximize battery life. Toyota has been selling the Prius for 10 years now, and they claim that nobody has ever had to have a battery replaced due to wearing out. (They are sometimes replaced due to crashes.)
