How long is it normal to cough after quitting smoking?

I smoked for 37 years, and I had a horrible cough while I was still smoking. In the morning I would cough almost to the point of throwing up. When I quit smoking it took all of about 10 days for my cough to wind almost down to nothing. A lot of throat clearing, but no real coughing after that.
