How Long Is A Traditional Japanese Obi Belt?

Most obi that are not pre-tied are somewhere between 3 and 4 meters long. You do sometimes run into special ones though, like the darari obi worn by maiko, which is substantially longer. The width of the obi varies too. Narrow, informal obi (e.g. hanhaba obi) are usually 15 cm. wide, maybe a touch larger or smaller. All other kinds of obi are at least twice that width, since the part of the obi that wraps around the body is supposed to be folded in half. Obi are usually made from bolts of fabric specifically for making obi, but I suppose in a pinch you could make it from one long rectangle of fabric (you might want to try to do it in sections though, since a 3 meter rectangle of fabric can get a bit hard to work with).
