A return ticket is only valid through the day you bought it for. If you don’t show up for the flight the day that your ticket is purchased for, then the airline will cancel your reservation and you will forfeit that air fare. If you are uncertain on when you are going to take that return flight, I would call ahead of time and cancel that portion of my trip. The airline will charge you a cancel fee (usually $100) and they will put the rest of the money into a credit file. That credit file will be good for a year though. You can always change the date of the return as well. They will charge you a change fee, which may or may not be cheaper. They will charge not only that change fee, but also the difference in air fare if there is one. It doesn’t matter if you booked it through a travel agent or not, once the airline has the money and a reservation for you, then you are dealing strictly with them.
