How long is a carnet valid?
The carnet is valid for one year, during which the businessperson may make as many trips as desired. Also, if the goods listed on the carnet are returned to the United States within the one-year period, the carnet serves as the customs control document and no entry or duty payments will be applied.
A. One year from the date of issue. Within this year, a carnet holder can visit as many countries in the system as he/she wishes, and enter and leave India as often as he/she wishes. All goods listed on the carnet must be returned to India by the expiry date, or prior to any assigned date(s) upon importation into a foreign country.
A carnet is normally valid for one year but you may be able to extend it by reapplying before it expires. You must contact both the association that issued the carnet and customs in the country where the goods are located. Note some countries may not allow extensions, and others may place restrictions on the type of goods for which they will allow an extension. If an extension cannot be obtained, the goods must be re-exported or, where permitted, declared to another customs procedure before the carnet expires. For detailed advice, contact the carnet-issuing association.
