How long have turkeys beeen part of Thanksgiving?
Though turkeys may have been a part of Thanksgiving tables during the first Thanksgiving meals with the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans, they were certainly no the focus of these meals. Lobster, goose, duck, cod, etc were more plentiful during this time in the Americas and were certainly also enjoyed at the Thanksgiving meal. As time went on, turkey became a central dish in Thanksgiving meals since wild turkeys were more abundant and easier to find than geese.
