How long has the Federal Republic of Germany been the official name of Germany?
At the conclusion of World War II Germany was divided into various sectors individually controlled by the victorious Allied powers: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. The sectors controlled by France, the United Kingdom, and the United States were merged on May 23 1949, to form the Federal Republic of Germany which was informally referred to as West Germany. In the German language the name of the country is Bundesrepublik Deutschland. On October 3, 1990 the former East Germany or German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) was reunified with West Germany. The reunited country retained the name Federal Republic of Germany. Sources: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/2WWwestGermany.
