Broadcaster Steve Wright was born in 1954 in Greenwich in London. He started his career on the radio in the 1970s when he teamed up with fellow DJ Mike Read on Radio 210 in Reading. From there he joined Radio Luxemburg in 1979 and then Radio 1 in 1980. At the start of his time on Radio 1, he presented on Saturday nights, then Saturday mornngs before moving to weekday afternoons in 1981 to present a show that was to become extremely popular – Steve Wright in the Afternoon. The show was based around a format of characters and sketches written and performed by Gavin McCoy, Richard Easter and Peter Dickson. The show had its “posse” of staff and producers who would join in the show at every opportunity. In 1994, he moved to Radio 1’s breakfast show, but left 18 months later at the time of major restructuring of the station when a number of established DJs had also left.
